Should You Worry About Hurricane Damage in Central Houston?

Kennon Petrini • April 16, 2019
We’re all too familiar with hurricane damage in the Central Houston area. When Hurricane Harvey tore through our city in August of 2017, Texas and parts of Louisiana faced record rainfall of up to 51 inches, 130 miles per hour winds, and $75 billion in total losses for the entire area impacted by the storm. 30,000 people had to relocate to temporary housing after the Category 4 storm finally passed. We do have to worry about future hurricane damage in the Central Houston area, and it’s important for homeowners to take the right steps to prepare now before disaster strikes.

Steps to Minimize Hurricane Damage
If we’re faced with an approaching storm, appropriately secure your home. If you can do so safely, move outdoor items like furniture, plants, grills, and the like inside. In high winds, these items can become projectiles. While this is a step that should occur before a storm develops, any dead trees or loose branches that are close to your home should be removed for risk of falling. Clean your gutters, inspect your roof, and reinforce your garage door. If your garage door blows in, the contents of your garage and your home itself are susceptible. When it comes to your windows and doors, masking tape is not enough to keep them in place. If your property does not have storm shutters (which are a worthwhile investment), you need to cover your glass with boards that are at least 5/8 of an inch thick. Make sure your family members and pets are ready to go if things take a turn for the worse. Have bags packed with all emergency necessities like clothing, medicine, nonperishable food, and important documents. Fill your gas tank, check your tires, and monitor the weather closely.

Have Insurance in Order After Hurricane Damage
With the record rain and flooding we experienced in Texas, make sure things are in order with your insurance ahead of time. With hurricane damage, know that if your home floods, your standard homeowners policy is not going to help you cover the cost of damages. Flood insurance can be purchased through your insurance company, but it is an independent policy covered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Purchasing this vital insurance is a must in Central Houston. After witnessing the damage left behind by Harvey, Restoration 1 of Central Houston wants everyone to get the aid they need to properly repair their homes and businesses.
